1.1 How to unfold the light tent

You unfold a ValueProducts24 light tent as follows:

1) Open the zipper of the carry bag and take out the folded light tent.

ATTENTION: Due to the tension of the metal frame the tent might unfold itself!

2) Unfold the light tent completely.

3) Put the light tent on the designated place.

4) Choose a background and fix it onto the inner back side of the light tent using the Velcro fasteners.

If necessary, fix the front cover onto the open side of the light tent with the Velcro fasteners (see also: What is the us of the front cover?).

You use a ValueProducts24 light tent as follows:

1) Put up the light tent on a suitable place (desk etc.).

2) Put your lamps to the left and right of your light tent, so that the light can shine through the side parts.

TIP: If you use our ValueProducts24 daylight tents, we also offer suitable studio lamps (see our online shop: www.valueproducts24.com).

3) Depending on the object and the effect you desire you can also put up a third lamp, which shines through from above or from the back.

4) Then place the object to be photographed in the light tent.

5) Now you can take photos through the front opening.

1.3 How to fold the light tent

You fold a ValueProducts24 light tent as follows:

1) Make sure that the light tent is placed on one of the side metal rings.

2) Grasp the front edge of the upper metal ring and press it carefully downwards.

3) Push the ring backwards until the light tent is folded into a Frisbee disc.

4) Grasp the flat light tent with both hands on the left and on the right.

5) Press both sides together to change the Frisbee disc into a taco chip ;-)

6) Turn the taco chip to the side and forward.

7) Now turn (at best with both hands) the two loops together in a way that in the end you get a folded ring.

1.4 1.4 FAQ - Frequently asked questions about the light tent

1.4.1 Why is the light tent offered for certain camera types?

The ValueProducts24 light tents can be used in general with all types of cameras, no matter if you do digital or analogous photography.

The different camera types mentioned in our eBay offers merely serve as search keywords.

1.4.2 The white background looks greyish on the photo! Do I need more i.e. brighter light?

If your background is white but looks grey on your photo or if the whole photo looks darker than expected, then your photo is underexposed. This does not necessarily mean that you need additional or brighter lights.

It just means that you need to have more light on the image sensor or the film. The main reason for having insufficient light on the image sensor or the film is your camera's automatic exposure function. The exposure value is too low.

To put it simply: Your camera's exposure function is not adjusted to a white background and it works as if there is a greyish background and exposes accordingly. The result is that everything on the photo looks darker than desired.

You can easily solve this problem: You just need to correct the exposure because it overexposes a little with dark objects in front of light backgrounds and underexposes, respectively, with light objects in front of dark backgrounds.

Almost every digital camera has an exposure correction function. Please have a look at the user manual of you camera. When you have learned how the exposure correction works, just increase or decrease the exposure gradually until you get the desired effect. With white backgrounds you usually have to correct the exposure by +1 up to + 1 1/3 (in most cases this is called EV Exposure Value). Trying and testing is the easiest way to get the best results.

If you have more experience in the field of photography and if you know how the correlation between aperture and shutter speed influences the exposure, then you should pay attention to the type of exposure your camera chooses. If the aperture increases (smaller focal ratio), the depth of sharpness decreases.

Furthermore, you should consider - when altering the exposure adjustment - the use of a camera tripod and a remote control release. For further information please visit our Buyers Guide (see our Info website: www.valueproducts24.info).

1.4.3 Can I use the light tent along with a shoe mount flash?

In general you can use our ValueProducts24 light tents along with a shoe mount flash.

With direct flashes, however, the light will directly hit the object, which inevitably produces drop shadows you actually wish to avoid.

Moreover the direct flashes produce undesired light spots and/or reflections on smooth and reflective surfaces.

Indirect flashes with reflection on the light tent can - depending on the situation - produce useful results.

We highly recommend, however, you use our ValueProducts24 studio lamps with daylight bulbs (see our online shop: www.valueproducts24.com), which means you use continuous light that penetrates the light tent from outside.

You clearly reduce the drop shadows and light spots and achieve a considerably more natural colour and contrast reproduction. Furthermore continuous light enables you to directly check the results, without having to take a test picture before to assess the exposure.

1.4.4 Can I use the light tent together with sun light?

You can perfectly use our ValueProducts24 light tents with natural sun light.

Just set up the light tent on a sunny day somewhere outside and use the sun as a light source.

ATTENTION: You need to make sure that no sun light enters the light tent directly through the front opening!

To achieve optimal results, we suggest you use midday sunlight, because before and after midday the sunlight's colour temperature changes.

Contents

1.4.5 How can I remove the wrinkles on the backgrounds?

Due to the type of packing, wrinkles in the backgrounds cannot be completely avoided.

In most cases, they are not a problem, as the exposure will be chosen in a way that the background will disappear on the photo anyway (isolation). The backgrounds can be ironed (middle temperature) on the smooth side of the fabric.

ATTENTION: You must never iron the velvet-like surface!

It is also possible to use the backgrounds only as a support for other fabric/vinyl/or cardboard backgrounds. You just place those backgrounds on our background.

Contents

1.4.6 Can I wash the backgrounds?

Washing the backgrounds is not possible due to the velvet-like coating!

You can use the backgrounds as a support for other fabric/vinyl/or cardboard backgrounds. You just place those backgrounds onto our background.

Furthermore we also offer all light tent backgrounds as replacement backgrounds for repeat orders (see our online shop: www.valueproducts24.com).

Contents

1.4.7 What is the use of the front cover?

You can use the white front covers accompanying our ValueProducts24 light tents for objects that have a smooth or reflective surface.

It is possible to prevent reflections - from the camera, the photographer and the surroundings - as much as possible. When using the front cover you just insert the lens of the camera through the slot.

In most cases you do not need to use the front cover.

Contents

1.4.8 What is the use of the black light tent?

The black ValueProducts24 light tents are specially made for taking photos of very light, shiny and reflective objects.

With such objects (platinum, gold, silver, chrome, glass etc.) you cannot avoid undesired reflections of the surroundings on the object's surface. This can be ugly or can even make a decent product photo impossible.

With this kind of objects a reflection of the surroundings can never be avoided a 100 %. But you can make use of this disadvantage by expressly using this reflection to emphasize the shapes of the object.

The black fabric of our ValueProducts24 light tent helps reduce most of the undesired reflections. White stripes are wrought into the black exterior coating to lighten the object and to produce a special reflection effect in the shape of black and white stripes on the object.

This helps you to take professional photos of difficult objects.

Contents

1.4.9 What do I need to know when using an acrylic pedestal?

When using extra equipment such as our ValueProducts24 acrylic pedestal, you need to try and test which background colour is best for the objects to be photographed.

With a black acrylic pedestal we suggest you use a black background, so that you create an area in which the objects reflect, but not the light tent itself.

Contents

1.4.10 What light tent shall I use along with an acrylic pedestal?

In general you can use our ValueProducts24 acrylic pedestal along with all the ValueProducts24 light tents.

When using a white ValueProducts24 light tent, you are more flexible with regards to the objects to be photographed. You can take photos of all kinds of objects. If you take photos of shiny objects, we suggest you use the black background along with the ValueProducts24 acrylic pedestal to reduce undesired reflections.

When taking photos of shiny objects, you get, however, better results with the black ValueProducts24 light tent, so we suggest using this kind of tent if you mainly photograph jewellery, silver, chrome etc.

Contents

1.4.11 What is the best use for 120 cm light tents?

The ValueProducts24 light tent 120 cm is made for taking photos of larger- scale objects such as pieces of furniture.

You can also use it especially when taking photos of children or animals. With this tent, you can cheaply and easily set up a perfect studio setting.

For lighting we suggest you use our ValueProducts24 studio lamps with daylight bulbs (see our online shop: www.valueproducts24.com).

Contents

1.4.12 Which daylight bulbs or studio lamps shall I use with what kind of light tent?

You can find information on how to combine our daylight bulbs or studio lamps with our light tents in our buyers guide (see our Info website: www.valueproducts24.info).

2 General tips on product photography

2.1 Five steps to better product photography

1) To make sure you get sharp photos, you need to know how to focus with your camera. The autofocus function of most cameras often provides unsatisfying results - above all when taking photos of smaller objects.

For this reason, we suggest you learn focusing your camera by reading the user manual of your camera. It can, for instance, be better to focus your camera manually.

2) In general we suggest you use a tripod because otherwise the faintest movement can produce blurriness on you photo. The smaller the distance to the object to be photographed, the blurrier the photo.

Even a cheap tripod will improve the quality of your photos. If you have to take professional product photos, we recommend that you acquire a professional high quality tripod.

3) To be able to photograph your object with the right depth of sharpness we suggest you use the AV Mode - the automatic exposure - of your camera (if your camera has this function) and the smallest aperture (highest focal ratio possible).

4) Choose a soft light for lighting. With the integrated flash of your camera or a shoe mount flash you will only get unsatisfying product photos, because you use a harsh, direct light (see also: What is the difference between soft and harsh light?).

You get soft light for example if you take photos outdoors on a cloudy day or if you use our ValueProducts24 light tents, which are made for this purpose. The type and texture of the material helps reduce the drop shadows and light spots considerably. And you achieve a more natural colour and contrast reproduction.

5) Use an image editing software for processing your photos. Even a cheap image editing software such as Photoshop ElementsTM can make product photography much easier.

You could think it would be faster to take decent photos in the first place, without having to edit the photos afterwards. But usually it is rather difficult to achieve perfect results in the first go.

An image editing software enables you to select a certain detail of you picture, to alter the photo size, to modify the exposure and sharpness - and this will only take you a few seconds.

2.2 FAQ - Frequently asked questions about product photography

2.2.1 Does a higher wattage bulb produce more i.e. brighter light?

It is a popular misconception that a bulb's wattage indicates its brightness. The wattage, however, merely indicates the lamps energy consumption.

The correct measurement for measuring brightness is the luminous flux or the light efficacy (lumen). That is why our ValueProducts24 daylight bulbs 30 watt reach the same brightness as an ordinary 135 watt incandescent light bulb.

Contents

2.2.2 What's the difference between harsh and soft light?

You have surely heard that especially in product photography you should use soft light, which is true.

If you have not had enough experience with different light situations in photography yet, you might find it difficult to tell exactly the difference between soft or harsh light.

We will explain in an easy and comprehensible way how to learn the differences. The method we are going to tell you works outdoors as well as indoors in a studio or other rooms.

You just need your hands. Hold your left hand upwards - flat palm open - and hold the index finger of your right hand a few centimetres above your left hand.

If you see a clear drop shadow, the light is harsh. If your finger barely leaves a shadow, the light is soft.

Contents

2.2.3 What kind of light shall I use?

The best light for product photography (and also the cheapest) is continuous light from daylight bulbs (see online shop: www.valueproducts24.com). By using this kind of light you can immediately make out the effect (see also: Does it make sense to use studio flashes?).

Thanks to the daylight bulb's colour temperature (5000-5500 kelvin), which is similar to the midday sun's colour temperature, you can achieve best results - be it with digital camera or with analogous daylight films.

Furthermore, the daylight bulbs produce cold light, which means, that the bulbs only heat up a little. So you can work in a relaxed way and it is no problem to use filters, foils etc.

Contents

2.2.4 Does it make sense to use studio flashes?

You can use professional studio flashes together with our ValueProduct24 light tents. Combining the two can produce excellent results.

In general, however, it can be advantageous to work with continuous light daylight bulbs. By using this kind of light you can immediately see the results and you can try and test various types of lighting -
you can see the effects immediately (see also: What kind of light shall I use?).

Contents

2.2.5 Does it make sense to use a tripod?

It is possible to achieve decent product photos without using a tripod.

We suggest, however, you use a tripod, because you are then able to use different functions of your camera to achieve different results - for example, deeper depth of focus through longer exposure times, which allows smaller apertures (higher focal ratio).

Another advantage of using a tripod is that you can use the automatic release of your camera. With the help of a tripod you can avoid vibrations.

Contents

2.2.6 Why are my photos blurry?

Blurry photos can mainly be ascribed to three causes:

1) The object has not been correctly focused.

2) The camera was moved during exposure.

3) The chosen resolution is too small.

Inaccurate focusing is the main reason for many blurry photos presented on the internet. We suggest you learn how to focus professionally by reading the user manual of your camera. It is also a good idea to learn how your camera's automatic functions work.

Blurry photos may be the result of nervous hands. The camera and the object need to be absolutely static while you take photos. So we suggest you use a tripod together with the automatic release of your camera or a remote control release for your camera.

A reason less common for blurriness is an insufficient resolution. It is always better to use the highest resolution possible, as you then have more possibilities of editing your photos afterwards. Every time you cut, crop, sharpen etc. and save as JPEG you cause some losses. So it makes sense to start with the highest resolution possible.
